Describe the research process and it’s importance for generating original ideas .

The research aspect of an overall project is crucial for forming original thoughts. Research allows you to explore deeper into your given topic. Allowing every aspect of the theme to be exerted and reached. As mentioned today in class, developing your thoughts broadly, then becoming more specific, like a pyramid, allows you to reach every level of your topic. For instance glass not only looking at how it’s used but perhaps exploring its psychological use. This could lead you to facts that you never knew existed. Continually learning about history and origination are all-essential in eventually evolving your idea into an original thought. Research allows you to go above and beyond what you already know letting your mind wonder in creative ways, giving yourself lists of information rather than limiting yourself to the knowledge you already know and ultimately risk plagiarizing someone else's work.

How could your written reflection feedback into and strengthen your research process?

Your written reflection is to do just as the title says, reflect back on what you have done to date. It’s a way for all your ideas and concepts you’ve discovered in your daily life, to inspire your work. You can go back and see photos that are posted in the reflection and see what made you inspired and go from there. For example if it’s a new knitting technique that interested you, you can further research the skill and learn where it originated from and learn history behind the culture. This process is also meant for you to look at your past or present work and see what worked and what didn’t. For instance, if a researching technique didn’t work, you would try another method or go back to reflection entry that worked for you. These are all extremely important aspects of the thought process. Reflecting will, ultimately allow you to figure out the perfect researching technique for yourself and give you a way to reach the next step of your project.

How could working in a team enable the generation of original concepts?

From my personal experience I know that two heads are better than one. When you have a group of different people from different cultures and ethnicities the ideas become more organic and creative. It becomes a session of bouncing ideas off everyone, continually building off of the idea from before. Just from today in class my group made progress in seeing all sides to our project at hand. We brought together our own personal experiences and different views to create original ideas. All together group work in my opinion is extremely important for anything such as feedback and therefore allows for original concepts based off of their knowledge and view point.

I found todays project to be very freeing with how to approach new ideas and perspectives for a project. It allowed me to not worry about the outcome but to be loose with interpretation and compose different shapes and scrapes i had. i was really happy with two things today, this first was, the moulding shape i made at the hip of my partner, it felt like an exaggeration of the hip and i liked out it balanced out the top portion of my garment. this helped allow for the deformation of the body. Lastly, on the right front view of my garment i found the idea of connecting the corners to almost bunch of the material created an interesting look. This was interesting because it allowed for a different aesthetic of more textural shapes rather than the lines organic shapes. Going forward some things i would change is continuing on that bunching motion to the right shoulder along the back. It feels incomplete at the moment now that i am able to look back and critique my work. As well as, playing around with the shapes of the shoulders rather than leaving them like shoulder pads.

What new techniques, processes or ways of thinking do you encounter this week?

i was opened to many new techniques this week, a new technique that suck with me was using different medias to express texture. This was a new experience for myself as i struggled a lot with using different media to express texture. i stayed mainly focused on using marker and lined techniques when i should've been using all different types of media example tap, paper ripping, spotted method to capture the texture. To further develop my techniques i will research different methods along with experimenting with new material such as oil pastel and chunkier markers. An interesting way of thinking i encountered was trying to draw an object and a material that would best describe it. I found myself thinking more about the feeling of the material rather than drawing how the texture looks. Going back to Monday's project i found the process of some of the sections to be strenuous. i had a harder time trying to figure out what shapes to use and a composition that would work, in only a few minutes to complete these challenges. However i very much enjoyed the second part of the day where we got to cut of our favourite shapes and form a garment on the body.

i went to the tutorial group for reflection today and it was very informative. We further discussed example of different types of writing and how well they were communicated. These examples were great because it allowed me to see what was working and what wasn't. For instance in one of the reflections the student had great description of the day however lacked explanation and more in-depth conversation about the subject. Another aspect of the session today that i felt was useful was looking at past reflections and having someone question what I've written. This allowed me to see that i could go more in-depth to my answers, constantly asking myself why?

the benefits of the 3 day project week was chance to see how fast pace the course and projects can be as well as, how they are all related. For me it gave me a quick glance already of what i liked and disliked. For example i throughly enjoyed the Mondays project where we used paper cut outs to create and unrecognizable figure. However i didn't like very much the reconstructing of textile samples. I found it hard for me to think of different ways of using medium for the textures as well as ideas that didn't relate in the same way.

The drawbacks from this project are the fact that we couldn't expand on the project more in class. Additionally, we were not able to further research our project to strengthen our final outcomes.

when i was combining my fabric with my jacket i had to consider shape, and form. My jacket was a simpler kind of blazer therefore on the inside there wasn't a lot to work with. therefore, when it came time to adding a different fabric we had to ask ourselves what was missing and although reflecting back now i understand what was missing; texture. if i could do my project over again i would choose a more textural fabric weather thats something with some volume to it for example: neoprene or a fleece types of fabric. i would've also chosen a pattern like checkered or a fabric that wasn't as similar to mine. however with my fabric i had chosen i decided to use ruffling technique to create rose swirls on the back of the jackets a long with a a like gathered sleeve on one side to give the arm and extended look.

my observational drawings helped my final design by the draping and  form of the drawings. i enjoy movement with dimension and simplicity so when coming to my design process i new these were element i wanted to portray. Opening up more seams allowed me to create new neck holes along with the opportunity to create different folds.

i learnt form the exhibit that when looking around i was more drawn to their process/ sketch books and textile design. it also helped me realize how broad and open the projects were to take what you see and really manipulate it in a different way. this was most seen in the samples, many were really textile heavy using different material to get a beautiful textile. seeing the full process really made me realize that i need to step of my sketch book work in the different ways of communicating my jacket. for example using different media such as paint to create texture. Also as i was observing i noticed many people using more than one material, breaking the rules by making the garment more interesting. using multiple fabrics made it more textural and interesting to look at especially with the right colour scheme. as well as the way you present your work is very influential and will draw more attention. looking around today one work stuck out to me the most in the way she presented it. all of her samples and garment were the same colour creating an altogether pulled in aesthetically pleasing look. she had done this by laying down a piece of her fabric on the floor and pulling the piece all together. in future, i will put more effort into the presentation aspect as that is everything to the way people view your work.

one artist that really impacted my view on the way to approach my reconstruction of my garment was Viktor and Rolf. The work that i researched was unbelievable as they took a conventional use such as a sleeping bag made it into a fashion statement. His work reminded me that you don't need to work the object to make it unrecognizable, sometimes less is more. this was the approach that i took on for my jacket reconstruction in order to still make a statement piece.

08/10/2017

When we were presented with our new project 'whats the point' i instantly knew exactly which project i wanted to redo, the jacket. When starting the jacket project i was very excited to discover the layers and work put into the blazer. i was excited to see how i could manipulate the jacket in weird and interesting ways. However, i wasn't successful with my final outcome due to lack of research. This didn't allow for me to have an end vision making myself lost in how to manipulate my jacket in a successful way. Another aspect of the project that i needed improvement was my textile samples. My samples were dull, using the same medium over again created a generic look between my samples with out any depth or imagination. For this time around i plan on staying true to my morals as a designer as well as further research. I plan on taking an environmental sustainability approach to my collection. This will help improve my textile samples as i plan on making intricate designs using all recyclable materials. i will than further develop those samples into fashion illustrations to see how the final outcome would look. For the research i have currently done, i feel i have a great foundation as well as broad ideas to explore and take my jacket in an interesting way. moving forward I'm going to continue looking at unconventional recycle materials and the feminine figure to stay true to what interests myself.

10/10/2017

We were mixed around in class to sit next to new people we have never talked to before. We'd done this to allow for new creative outlooks on our project taking in different cultural backgrounds and how that affects their point of view. We then paired up with someone within in the group to talk about our projects. This allowed time for an in-depth conversation based on our chosen path of where we would like to take our new project. My partner gave me artist to reference, one being Alexander McQueen's savage beauty collection. She also showed me the connections between her reference photos that she copied and my work. This allowed  me to see a different researching view on my topic, showing me different ways of expressing my ideas. for example she had a beautiful picture of fabric torn and fringing in the middle. She connected this photo from her research to my spider web images. Not only was the advice given useful and different but i also got to see someone else process and how they go about their research and development methods. In the future like my partner had i would love to print out more pictures as well as duplicates of photos i find most relevant to my research and use them for collaging. Overall, i felt having that quick exercise in the morning allowed me to do some of my more successful researches later on that day

12/10/2017

One of our parts to our project this week was to create a video of how research affects our process. one of the videos i found really interesting was made by a group who combined their references photos with their outcome. I found this very successful as there was a clear connection between what the student produced and where the inspiration came from. it was direct and straightforward way of connecting the process of research to the final outcome. Taking this idea of collaging research with the final product, i would express these connections in my sketchbook once i have completed a project. I also think this will be a great visual aid for me to physically see my start and finish collapsed together. This will allow for em to see if i was successful in my outcome for the project completed.

Volumes in the Dark

For my jacket deconstruction i have decided to name my new garment "Volumes in the Dark." For my new project i decided to focus on the feminine figure as well as the use of sustainable materials. Eco-friendly materials is something that i have always been passionate about.  i feel that how we treat our world is what we will receive in return. However, the sad fact is some people don't realize the affect of  our product abuse, and how its effecting our planet. Therefore, these issues remain in the dark. The word volume in my title for my garment refers to the feminine figure. When i look at the female body i think about how the wait can be accentuated, how the body can be an exaggerated version of an hourglass. Throughout my research, i found volume to be the most manipulating concept of fabric. it allows you to create distorted gathering shapes emphasizing the waist. In summary, my interest in the female figure and how volume highlights certain aspects of the body. As well as, my love for sustainability and its on going problem on being overshadowed, brings me to my title of my garment being "Volumes in the Dark."

i decided to take my 'whats the point project' a little further this time and choose to conduct a photoshoot for my garment. i started my planning process of thinking where i wanted to shoot my clothing. Due to my eco-friendly take on this project i decided to choose a natural setting, the park. i am very fortunate to have my pick of parks here in London. However, i wanted one that had a more unperfected nature look. Due to the day being shortened i choose to do the shoot at the Alexandra Palace park. This was a perfect time and location do to the autumn decay of leaves, as well as the time being 'golden hour.' I choose to position my model in certain settings with tall decaying grass and broken trunks. I felt this was important because it was a raw natural balance of nature with my garment. I felt that overall the shoot was very successful and have some great shots displaying my jacket in a better way then just on its own.

16/10/2017

i had my progress tutorial and i was told that i was better suited for fashion communications due to the work i have made in the past month. This at first was an answer i was expected to get due to my lack of experience and still trying to figure out the best way to express my work. However i am still not sure if this is a path i want to go down. My dream has always been to be the designer and to make the physical clothing. I wanted to have both the designing aspect and business, which gave me my perfect course of fashion design with marketing. So in the future i can possible go into costume design as well as have the  business knowledge to work as a stylist for example. However, on the other hand i also understand where my tutor was going when telling me i would be a better fit for fashion communication. I really enjoy the photography aspect of fashion as well as the overall aesthetic. i think about there being two choices for me now an easier way through the foundation year and going with fashion communication and a harder working pathway to fashion with marketing and possible not getting into the program.

At the barbican, we walked around grabbing inspiration from our surrounding architecture. We took observational drawings from the clashing architecture around us. i mainly focused on the contrast between the different materials being used. as well as the geometric shapes in certain areas of the barbican. this allowed me to create a series of drawings that showed their personalities on page. i really enjoyed moving around London to grab different aspects of the architecture and the surroundings. i feel it allowed for  a fresh look at the project, as we grab inspiration from our atmosphere frequently. During this process i was especially looking at the scale of what i was looking at such as the material. this allowed for some interesting texture drawings, that will hopefully allow me to push into a more 3 dimensional way of thinking.

24/10/2017

i have learnt a variety of skills these past two months while being here. i have learnt how to bring through a certain energy to my piece using colour that reflects off of what i draw. I have also learnt how to draw freely and loosely, not to focus on perfection. This has helped me see fashion and textiles in a whole new way allowing me to create original sample. The mark making that we have learnt has allowed for interesting sections in my work that i then develop into unique and creative pieces. Additionally, using inspiration from my work to make collage paper i feel its really interesting because the whole piece is inspired from our observational drawings.

i feel that my strengths in my work come from my observational drawings. i feel at first i struggled with the mark making and textural aspect, however i believe that each week my work becomes stronger in the skills needed to create a successful observational drawing. i also feel my connections between my work in my sketch book and my final product is one of my strengths. i believe this because I'm able to pick the parts of my work that i find interesting, want more detail, or want to duplicate.

i feel that i still need to practice my mark making as i said above each week my skills improve. however, i believe that my mark making can be even more deliberate. As well as, how my sketch book is brought together, i feel that i need to create a scene or story with each page and i feel sometimes i miss that aspect. going forward i can bring in more colour to my pages and free drawings of images in my sketch book to tell a story with each of my projects.

26/10/2017

while we were finishing our ten samples for this weeks project our tutors went around to see how we were doing along with giving us feedback. since my progress tutorial i was told to bring out an energy with my colour choices and mark making. This past week as we did our observational drawings that was my main focus. i paid attention to the type of feeling certain elements of the architecture gave me. As well as the contrasting feeling of the different buildings surrounding the Barbican. therefore, when i was told that my energy in my work had improved that showed my understanding and my new outlook on using my material is a key tool moving forward. i was also given feedback on my samples. i was told that some of them looked too much like embellishments. i can see where this thought was from, i re-evaluated my pieces knowing what not to do in the future and how to fix my current samples in order to make them a textile pattern. for one sample i could repeat was i had done and perhaps scan it multiple times to create a 2D samples print pattern. However my successful samples were ones where i used layering and dramatic effect, along with texture and colour. i feel my successful samples were ones that had a simpler concept to them. Furthermore, in the future i think ill try and bring out these successful lapses to this project in order to create all strong textile samples.

31/10/2017

i continued to add onto my structure today creating more dimensional aspects. i really loved this add on because on one side it looked like two separate forms coming out. It reminded me of almost robotic block shaped wings. i felt this could be an interesting way of going on with this project as i would create these forms coming out in different directions all around the body.

For my choice of fabric i knew exactly what i wanted my image to be structured with a feminine flare. however the choice of fabric i wanted to use was very stiff and heavy in look and texture. I thought that maybe instead of finding a new fabric completely that i could add on a lighter fabric such as chiffon or organza. This will allow for a contrasting look to my garment both in colour and material. Going forward I'm going to experiment with how i can combine the two fabrics in order to make them in unison instead of two separate pieces of fabric overlaid.

1/11/2017

i went into the studio all day to work on my garment, allowing myself to receive feedback and a stimulating working space. as i began to construct my garment i starts to struggle with conveying the structure and the volume of my design. As i finished piecing all the patches together it struggled with staying no the stress form due to the weight of the one-sided sleeve. As well as, the volume wasn't holding up. i knew i needed structure underneath in order to keep my desired form. So i decided to go to pound land to find a structural material. i ended up getting a tin plate where i used it as a manipulated shoulder pad in order to keep my garment full.

when it came time to add on my contrasting material i had an image in my head of what wanted it to look like. So i began to play around with the material and trying different methods of dropping. i continued to lay the fabric flat against the fabric. I tried creating a volumous curve in the fabric. However, i felt the fabric was taking away from my garment rather then adding on the feminine feel. Therefore, i decided that maybe it wasn't the material that i used to create the garment but how i style the model with it afterwards that gives it the feminine look.

4/11/2017

today i woke up at 6:30 to go paint balling. i had never gone before and actually ended up being a lot of fun. it made me think about bursts of random colour and the spraying technique of the paint ball exploding on someones jumpsuit. i feel that for my future projects i could take paint balling as an inspiration for colour and random placements of colour. it reminded me of a scene from the movie Princess Diaries where they had balloons full of paint and used darts to burst them open. it created a mosaic of different coloured paint and splatters on the canvas. i feel this could be an interesting technique with the right project in the future.

8/11/2017

today i decided that instead of going to buy my fabric that i would research are about different way i could construct my garments as well as possible inspiration for my photoshoot. going in i didn't have any books in mind nor any kind of books i was looking for. i found the best way to look at what kind of book i wanted was took just search the whole section. i decided to look at sculptural work, corset construction, along with photography to hit all aspects of my work. one book that really intrigued myself was Roxy Paine. His work was a contest between man made materials and nature. Paines' sculptures resembled a tree however, it was made out of metal. this made me start thinking about my image of my garment and its futuristic feel, and how having these modern natural materials in nature would both contrast and go together with my over all image. i want my whole photoshoot to give off the impression of being in the future and what clothes will perhaps look like in many years. i believe that Paine's sculptural artwork would be the perfect prop to my overall vision.

10-11/11/2017

i was pleasantly surprised on how well my garment construction went over the past two days. since this was my second time completing this project, i felt my overall image of having this volumes sleeves with organic shapes forming all around was very clear. this allowed me to working fast on creating a my front base from the sleeve design. the fabric this time around really allowed me to manipulate and add on different structures without it being weighed down. the material was creating the smooth matte finished look i had hoped for without making it look sporty. Overall, i feel that my garment was successfully contracted and made, without any issues along the way. if i would change anything about my outcome, i think i would try and create one of my designs from my developmental design sheet. As well as, find a way to keep the garment from slipping back. i feel that could easily be fixed by extending the front chest panels farther down and connecting it further to the back of the jacket.

11/09/2017

My group was given the words polytheism, mesh and obscure. We started off by defining the words we weren't sure about, for example polytheism belief in more than one god. This allowed us to than bring our own personal ties to the words and start discussing what they meant and building off of those original thoughts. To document our ideas we originally started off with each word and jotting down what we thought about them. Than grew into a chain link and connected our ideas to each word. Going forward I feel a more broad research on the topics would of been useful before hand because now we have to backtrack our thoughts.

12/09/2017

To broaden our thoughts on the words we were given, we went to the V&A for inspiration for our different religions. We found inspiration from the buddhist collection of sculptures, as well as the textile collection of carpets from the asian section. This allowed us to have a visual interpretation of each culture and their ways of showing how they represent their religion. We than moved towards the stained glass window display inspiring our christianity religion and how we could represent it. Using the light as a doorway for all spiritual gods. This allowed for a good starting base for our visually aspects of our project. Moving forward with the images collected, we now have a broad idea of where we would like to take our project. Going to the library will allow for deeper research into these religions.

13/09/2017

With our knowledge from the other day at the V&A we were able to go to the library with a clear picture of what to research and look for. We collected information based on the religions and symbols used in their rituals and beliefs. However, when discussing our idea with there groups we received feedback that changed our idea around. After much thought and discussion we came up with a new idea. This was an important key to take away from today because outside feedback only strengthened our idea and made it into a stronger concept

14/09/2017

Reflect on your group presentation what would you change?

our group presentation was not the highlight of the project, unfortunately we couldn't incorporate a strong presentation aspect to our final piece ultimately weakening our whole concept. if i could change anything about our presentation it would be how we spoke. instead of having written out scripts, i would talk more freely and openly about our final piece. As well as, creating more visual components to our presentation and perhaps more research on how to properly present the concept. I feel that it was important to have full group participation and to be on the same page in order to create a solid outcome.

What in your opinion makes a successful presentation?

I feel that a successful presentation is when each of your group mates is excited about what they have produced and are eager to share. Also, starting with presenting the final piece first than back tracking. Visual aids are a huge deal in order to have everyone's attention. Having a 'vision board' to complete your process is also helpful to obtain the full scope of your work and research. The use of performance and demonstration as well as creating humour also make the presentation more enjoyable.

reflect on the group process: what are the pros and cons of working as part of a team?
i feel that working in a team is extremely important because in any industry now a days, theres always team work and helping each other out. You create ideas more easily and and originality is also sparked through what some people know and don't. However, there are some cons to working as a team. members may not be on the same page as everyone else and decide not to participate making it frustrating and harder to continue on without another head bounce ideas off. miscommunication can also be a huge conundrum as some group members can be on a whole different wave length and not see eye to eye. This creates conflict and stales the the task at hand. Furthermore, i feel teamwork is very important for building communication skills, embracing new ideas and working well with others.

19/09/2017

How does observational drawing/mark making inform the design process?

observation drawing and mark making allows your eyes to follow the shapes and lines of the object you are observing. This will further help with seeing objects in a new way as well as capturing something you didn't see before. Observational drawing was useful for me to see the form in a whole new media and the different medias used gave a different outcome each time. Mark making was crucial for capturing the different textures and material on your paper. Different media played a major part in building textures. Scratching the paper, mixing ink and pastel were some of the techniques used. For myself mark making was a little challenging as I kept using the same techniques of line drawing to capture the texture. However, as i continued my drawing for the day i began to open up to new techniques. I started to experiment with different fabrics and mixed media to really capture the overall feel and look of the material used.

Timed exercises are important to the creative/design process why?

It's very important to do timed exercises because it allows for you mind focus less on the perfection of the object and more of capturing the object in its simplest form. While doing these exercises i also found, that it allowed my drawings to be more free with line and shape. Furthermore, this allowed me not to worry about detail and perfection, creating something unusual. With these images produced it made it interesting and unique to see the different marks and how they can be further produced. From these timed sessions i produced interesting and unusual drawings that was further developed into textile prints.

25/09/2017

Our jackets personalities came out today, we started to observe our jackets to get a sense of what type pf person would wear our coats. as i was observing my own jacket these key words stuck out to me: texture, tailored, stretchy fabric, 70s, 30 year old women, stains (hard worker), button was rustic (more casual), not a lot of money, bow pads-equestrian. All these words helped paint a picture of what kind of women wore this jacket. As we went about our day we did technical drawings to really observe the detail of our jacket. this allowed for me to see my jacket in a basic shape and form rather than looking ad paying attention to the texture. Our main focus no in our sketch book is to start thinking about how our designs and drawings should be played out. i need to continue working on this as i have a lot of negative space around my drawings. in order to make them look like they belong i think ill begin to try and overlap the drawing a little more as well as adding more detailed drawings to the side and even collage images.

26/09/2017

Today was a tougher day, we started to really deconstruct our jackets and i found it hard to grab inspiration from my own. when i saw everyone else blazers i noticed more detail and different fabrics encompassing the inside. Contrary to mine, mine was simple on the inside with shoulder pads and interfacing. Therefore when it came time to drape and contract a sculpture/garment it was hard to make mine original and interesting. This was due to the lack of construction on the inside. Going forward with this project I'm going to continue draping on figures in hopes of coming up with something interesting. i will continue my research to artist who work with deconstruction. this will further help me discover new ways of taking a regular object and developing  it in a new/innovative way.

02/10/17

For this weeks project we were introduced to two ladies who graduated from CSM and are now partners in their own business. They discussed some very useful information on CSM courses, their techniques in how they researched and combined their sketchbook work. They continued to talk about how research is the most important tool and how they would spend months researching. When we began our observational drawings they came over and talked to use individually about our projects. I received very useful information saying: i should zoom into aspects of the Croatian costume that i enjoy rather then looking at the full picture. As well as, what part of the glass blowing process i find interesting and to connect the costume and the process someway. Today i felt was a successful day altogether due to the feedback i had received a long with the idea of capturing close ups of images to make my samples.

03/10/2017

we were given the challenge of creating 5 different samples in each primary colour creating an overall 15 samples. It was hard for me to think beyond the basic words we were given: textile, collage, flat, pale and saturated. However, as i begun to look at my media and think about what those words meant to me and the colour i became easier to create different samples. I really enjoyed the challenge we were given next to take the 15 samples and choose 3 previous drawings from our sketch book and recreate the image three times. it forced me to think 3 dimensional in some parts and abstract in others to create unique samples. i found this exercise very useful as i was not using my go to material to create these 9 samples.

05/10/2017

During the the beginning of the day we were set in groups and were critiqued by our fellow peers. Due to my process for this week being Murano glass and my traditional dress wear being Croatian folk dance called Kolo. i decided to focus on movement of how the glass is expressed, along with the transparency and organic shapes Murano glass makes. For Kolo costumes i focused no the beautiful patterns expressed on their skirts and scarves a long with the embroidery on the head pieces they would wear. Moving forward with the groups critiques, i was given great advice to focus on the transparency of the object and how the design is shown through the glass. Along with, sculpture so breaking away from 2D adding in unconventional objects. Continuing on the idea of one of my pieces made with the textural paint. this was really great advice as i was able to see a different view point of my process that i hadn't seen previously. Going forward with my day i noticed my sketchbook needing a little more attention therefore i was asked to be critiqued by one of my peers. I was given great advice moving forward saying that i should work on the scale of my drawings and compositions, overlapping of drawings and collaging, cutting around the photos to make it more personalized and lastly, using the whole page. This advice was a huge help because now i am able to fix where my weak spots are and continue to strengthen my progress.

09/10/2017

today in my group we presented our new research to our group and i received some great feedback. during this critique i realized a disconnect between my research and my direction of my project. This allowed me to go back and think about the connection of my research to my work. i did this by finding  aspects of my research i am most interested in and by there i was given advice on how to connect my interests. Repetition, using recyclable materials and creating samples, along with researching past CSM graduates for their making of recycle fabrics were the critiques i was given. Going forward this has allowed me to see a clear picture of what i would like to do next. i will begin to look up unconventional recycle materials, and start experimenting with them to see what works and what doesn't. As well as, researching the CSM graduates and making a similar sustainable fabric. I feel the feedback i received today will  allow my project to develop in a new way that will have an image of what it will turnout like in the end.

i went into Archway to work on my jacket with a clear image of what i wanted my new jacket to look like. i kept in mind my five words that i had come up with he day before: hourglass, sustainability, 1900 feminine silhouette, repetition and volume. This already was a better starting point than my last project because i knew what outcome i wanted. I started my deconstruction process by taking apart the liner, already i found lots of interesting fabrics shapes and details thing my jacket. i was really inspired by the curve of the lining connecting to the blazer fabric. The pattern reminded me of a corset and knew that this would be the foundation for the front of my garment. While i was experimenting and deconstructing i was able to ask for advice from my peers working beside me. This allowed me to have a fresh eye on my work in order to create a successful outcome. As i progressed with my discovery of my jacket, i had finally found a layout i found best fit my image. I began to manipulate the waste in order to create a voluminous skirt and a corset waist. This outcome allowed me to create my view on femininity of a dramatic waist. Referencing back to sketchbook during this processes allowed for me to look back on my drawings and research to see which parts i wanted to contribute to my final image. Being at archway, around my classmates really allowed for a successful day. I was able to give my complete attention to my project with other inputs on my process and outcome. Therefore, with my future projects i plan on continuing coming into Archway campus to work. This will allow for progressive feedback and a dedicated working area.

If i had more time to work on my project or redevelop it in a different way i would've incorporated more nature and repetition. There was one photo i found very interesting of a spider web with teardrop water lining the web. It was a beautiful photo of repetition, which reminded me of breads or pearls on a line of thread. If i could've incorporated that idea in my work i would done a more open caged look. This new look would incorporate a new side of my research linking back to spider webs and Mandel's sustainable spray on fabric.

Today, i completed my workshop induction for sewing and knitting. I found today extremely useful and inspirational, as i was taught techniques and use of machine that i had never used before. the firsts embroidery stitching on the sewing machine. i learnt different methods of embroidering different fabric on top of another. In the future it will allow myself to explore and develop further dimension and texture for my samples. But on technique really stuck out for me, it was free sticking of dissolvable plastic. this method showed me a really interesting way of getting a patchy textural look, almost like a web. This method would've been very useful for this past weeks project with my jacket and creating textile samples. the way the thread is interlaced would've allowed me to create spider web look and breading throughout the sample.  I had never used a weaving machine before today as well, and this gave me a burst of ideas and inspiration for future projects. The different layering methods, colour combinations, along with patterns that you can make all made me really excited for where i could go with future projects. The weaving machine will also allow for me to make fabric samples in the future and to be more creative with them.

i went to an event happening at the Alexandra Palace called stitch and knit. i thought this would be a great way to buy more materials as well as different textile outlooks. i was stunned to see so many venders with amazing artwork, especially for textiles. In the middle of the room there was an exhibit of recent graduates. i stumbles upon this recent graduate called James Bowen, he displayed an amazing textile collection. He used a mix of fur and different coloured silks to create a beautiful mosaic pattern on the back of the jacket. However, i was more impressed with how he displayed his work. Bowen used the same fur fabric on the jacket as a base for this business cards some other photos and book. This really brought me back to the day we displayed our jackets out and they told us to think of how we present our work. In the future, i would like to take the idea of  displaying the fabric along with my work,  it really ties the whole process together successfully. After i visited him i continued on and was instantly drawn to this one women work. She had displayed around the room beautiful modern design garments of what looked like to be sustainable fabric. It just so happened that the designer Jose Hendo, was a past graduate of LCF. She told me all about her collection and how the fabric is indeed sustainable and made from tree bark in her home town. This was really inspiring for me to see because of my pathway of wanting to be sustainable. Jose showed me that you can have both original complicated looks and eco friendly materials.

art exhibit review: 18/10/2017

As I walked into the exhibit of Hassan Hajjaj ‘Rock Star,’ I was instantly taken aback by the culture in the room. He has various photographs of people he knows and admires known as “rock stars,” wearing vibrant colours with a canned food from Islamic culture. The intensity of colour in the room reminded me of African culture. Malick Sidibe and Seydou Keita were only some African portraiture that Hajjaj was inspired by for his collection. As you continue walking around you begin to hear music. Hajjaj has created a wall dedicated to portraits of his admired pop stars, however they were moving images. One by one, each artist would perform a traditional song to themselves and their culture while the other performers are positioned and listening to them. I feel this video element to the exhibit was a beautiful touch and very important for the experience of his work. As the audience you feel welcomed and apart of their culture that they are sharing. The music video being very modern was an intriguing way of combining earlier traditions. I feel that Hajjaj was trying to bring culture towards today’s society in London. England can be a grim place at some points and Hajjaj wanted to bring his culture Morocco to London. He states, “I’m just tapping into how all the traditions and cultures have power. Every country and culture has a style, has a tradition. Within the traditional clothing, there’s a style, there’s a couture…” This is best seen in his installation in the middle of the exhibit where he places a motorcycle with YSL patterned print on the bike. As well as, the couture playing dolls were decorated in traditional clothing. The dolls were sitting on top of a replica of the life scale motorcycle. The audience Hajjaj was trying to obtain was anyone. I feel his work was meant to have no age limit and that his culture was supposed to be expressed to anyone who wanted to listen. However with that being said I feel in reality, I feel many university high school students al the way to elderly men and women are most intrigued by Hajjaj collection.

when i look at my past textile projects i found that they were bland with colour and texture. i knew that in order to improve i needed to step outside my comfort zone and expand on my samples. i decided to go to the fabric warehouse store where i was faced with thousands of fabrics. grabbing inspiration from my peers work i knew i wanted something where i would attach and expand to the preexisting fabric. i found some great fabrics such as a canvas like material so i found be able to paint and stitch. As well as, a burlap stack/ mesh material that would allow for me to weaving into the fabric different textural materials. Additionally i got organza to allow for detail and light movement within my samples.

As i was leaving the kings cross area, i stumbles upon a sculpture. it was box likes structure looking like i was being multiplied in different ways creating a depth allusion. It instantly reminded me of Die Gestalten Verlag's collection of collages. The infinite feel to the piece as well as the layering and shapes repetition i felt was a clear connection. it brought me back to thinking about one of my samples, where i layered the canvas fabric along with my thin material to create a wave affect. If i could redo aspects of this project i would do a small series of collaging and depth perception samples using fabric. i would create samples that had certain areas of different depths that go along with my observational drawings.

the three shapes that i had cut out really aloud me to explore movement and 3D components to my finally outcome. For example for our first project similar to this one i had flat edges with very little curves making it harder to create 3D shapes and exaggerations of the garment. Therefore, for this project when looking back at my shapes in my observational drawings, i was looking for organic wavy shapes, an abstract and a combination of both for my shapes. My selection really allowed me to manipulate the fabric in interesting ways creating abstract shapes and hills within the garment.

When we started off with creating the enclosed shapes i was much focusing on really connecting the edges instead of thinking about how i could make an interesting shape using the rules. Therefore, when i was mapping in my head the direction i wanted to go in, i knew exactly what u had to fix. I decided to use the edges of my curved shape in order to make an intriguing dimensional outcome. This really allowed my piece to become unconventional and interesting with he different points and movement of the paper.

i can definitely see how a collection could be made out of the process we went through today. using the different shapes within our piece would create a really interesting collection. You can continue to see different positions of the shapes used and combine with others as well. This overall process really just allows your to focus of the garment like a sculpture instead of worrying about how to make something appealing to the figure. You can take different aspects of today in the future for making a collection to push your ideas past the conventional style in order to make something unique. i personally really love this exercise because it allows me to think form and sculptural aspects rather than that looks good not he model/mannequin.

reflecting back on my garment and what i was able to make i feel that what i wanted to accomplish was there and successful. However, i believe that i could of done a stronger job of creating my garment. i think that during our independent study week i will try and reconstruct my garment in order to create the volume that i wanted. I'm going to continue my research for this project and look at structural garments that have the big volume aspect and light fabric. i feel that with a more structural form it will allow me to achieve my desirable outcome that i wanted this past week.

today i decided to get in contact with someone who is on the BA course for fashion communication. i hope that this will allow for me to have a clear view on what i want to do moving forward applying to my desired courses. i think I'm struggling between the actual work that fashion communication does and me not being able to test out one of their projects. I'm going to continue to try and add a fashion communication aspect to my fashion outcomes to see what i enjoy and am successful at. furthermore, when i meet her i feel and hope i will have a clearer mind of what i want to achieve now and in the future.

tonight i went to go and celebrate the Guy Fawkes bonfire night at Victoria Park. Although the music choice wasn't that good, the display was beautiful. it reminded me of how i felt about paint balling and the explosions of colour. However these explosions were deliberate and were meant to create the beautiful splay that it did in the sky. Alike paint balling, i could use the idea fireworks and perhaps the use of them and how they are made, for a future project. i enjoy the image of the popping colours illuminate in front of the moon tonight. it reminded me of florescent lights and the sparkle and light to contrasted.

today i went to go and get fabric so i could redo my original Public art final garment. the original Garment, i wasn't happy with how it lacked what i feel my design was all about, structure. therefore, for my new garment i needed a fabric that could either hold the design that i desired or create a skeleton for the outline. i knew that with my timeline i would need to find a durable fabric that could display all factors of my design. i had a material in mind already, neoprene, this was perfect for being light and mouldable. Though, when i looked at the selection i was struck with an image problem. All the neoprene looked very sporty, so i had to make a choice. If i would risk it looking like a sports garment and have all the design aspects checked or find another material that may or may not work like he first time. i considered getting a cotton material or something more stiff however i knew i would still need to get interfacing in order for it to hold. None the less, i ultimately chose the neoprene as my fabric due to its futuristic appeal and malleability of the fabric.

today i completed my photoshoot. i decided to choose places that to me represented a modern setting or futuristic feel. i decided that one of my locations would be at the kings cross location where the black pillars stand. i feel the pillars and matte finished smooth geometric pattern really gave off a modern feel. especially with the movement of linear perspective in the space i felt was on of the perfect settings for the photoshoot. my second location was at the strand LV exhibition, i had seen videos of Ryoji Ikeda's black and white stripped moving pattern floor and new that was the perfect location. However, due to the art being so public i was told i wasn't allowed to shoot in the moving image area. the exhibit itself was very inspiring on how simple and idea of different lined patterns could create so much attention and fascination. i believe that the more interactive your art is the more people will be drawn to visit and engage. i can take this idea moving forward with my garments and how i can create not only a wearable component but an interactive eon for those admiring the clothing.
